What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old traditional system of medicine originated in India. Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest continuously practiced form of medicine in the world. It is not a religion, but rather deals with the science of living.
The word Ayurveda is broken into two parts, Ayus means life (consisting of the body, mind, senses, and soul) and Veda meaning wisdom or knowledge. Ayurveda is often translated into English as the “Science of Life”. Ayurveda is part of the larger wisdom tradition folded in to the Vedas, which are considered by many scholars to be the oldest written texts on the study of life.
Ayurveda gives the path for healthy living in the world. Its theory and principles are based on the study of the natural world and its entire realm. The concepts of atomic theory, quantum mechanics, and the idea of a vibratory field that makes up the fabric of the universe, were alluded to in these ancient vedic texts.
The definition of health according to Ayurveda is: “one who is established in Self, who has balanced dosas (primary life force), balanced agni (fire of digestion), properly formed dhatus (tissues), proper elimination of malas (waste products), well-functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss is called a healthy person.
Ayurveda is also considered the sister science to Yoga as they are both concerned with the development of the soul, and as a means to that end, the proper care of the body and the mind. It focuses on how the body, mind, and spirit must live in balance and in harmony for us to be truly healthy and happy.
